Velcro Holster Guide: Hook-and-Loop Holsters for Bags and Vehicles

Quick answer: A velcro holster has a hook-and-loop back, so it sticks to a loop panel inside a backpack, sling bag, fanny pack, vehicle or safe instead of clipping to a belt. Rigid Kydex versions hold their shape; soft wrap-around versions adjust to many pistols. Use one where the bag or panel stays with you.

What Is a Velcro Holster?

“Velcro” here means hook-and-loop. The holster carries the stiff hook side on its back, and it presses onto the soft loop side, which many carry bags have as a built-in panel. Without a loop panel, there’s nothing for it to grip.

Makers describe them by where they go. 945 Industries lists its Kydex holster’s attachment as a “Velcro panel for secure placement in compatible fanny packs or backpacks.” M-Tac says its soft holster insert is “Designed for use with tactical bags and backpacks that have a loop panel.” Gun Goddess sells adhesive velcro holsters for use “In Home or Vehicle” and “In a Bag/Purse.” For carrying in a handbag, see our purse holster guide.

Where Does a Velcro Holster Work?

  • Backpacks, sling bags and fanny packs with a loop panel, the main use every maker above lists. Our fanny pack holster guide covers waist packs, and our CCW backpack guide covers backpacks.
  • Vehicles and around the home, using adhesive loop material (Gun Goddess’s adhesive velcro holsters).

Bag carry is off-body carry: the gun goes where the bag goes. Our page on off-body carry and its risks covers keeping control of the bag, and our concealed carry sling pack guide covers choosing one. For vehicle mounts, see our car holster guide.

How to Choose a Velcro Holster

  1. Trigger guard first. Whatever the material, the holster must cover the trigger guard completely so nothing in the bag can reach the trigger.
  2. Retention you trust. A molded shell or a strap that holds the gun when the bag is jostled, set down or carried upside down.
  3. A panel that matches. The holster’s hook side needs a loop panel big enough to grip it.
  4. One fixed spot. Put it in the same place every time so your draw from the bag is the same.
  5. Practice the draw with an unloaded gun from the actual bag, opening it the way you would for real.

No Loop Panel? Add One

If a bag or surface has no loop lining, adhesive loop-side velcro gives the hook side something to grip. It’s the same idea Cloudster Pillow uses: the Cloudster Pillow Industrial-Strength Holster Velcro Strips are the loop-side adhesive velcro that comes with every Cloudster Pillow, sold on their own for extra holsters.

Spare Magazines in the Same Bag

A spare magazine rattling loose in a bag is hard to find in a hurry. The Cloudster 9mm Magnetic Sling Bag Mag Carrier and the .45 ACP version work like a velcro holster for the magazine: a flat carrier with hook-side velcro on the back sticks to a bag’s loop lining, and two magnets hold the magazine. Each comes with 2 adhesive loop-side velcro pieces and 1 alcohol wipe for bags without a loop lining.

Velcro Holster: Questions People Ask

Does a velcro holster need a special bag?
It needs a loop panel. Many carry bags have one built in; otherwise, add adhesive loop-side velcro.

Are velcro holsters safe?
Only if the holster covers the trigger guard completely and holds the gun firmly. Check both before you carry.

Can a velcro holster go on a belt?
Not by itself; it’s made for loop panels. For belt carry, use a holster built for a belt, and for vests or battle belts see our MOLLE holster guide.

Velcro holster or belly band?
A velcro holster lives in a bag or on a panel; a belly band wraps your body. See our belly band holster guide for that option.
