Best Glock for Home Defense: G17 vs G19 vs G45 vs G26

The Gen6 versions come in lighter with a loaded magazine: Glock lists 31.39 oz for the G17 Gen6, 30.51 oz for the G45 Gen6 and 29.10 oz for the G19 Gen6. How the four differ for a gun kept at home

Glock 17: full-size slide and frame

Glock lists the G17 at 17 rounds with a 4.49-inch barrel. Its line of sight is 6.50 inches, compared with 6.02 inches on the G19 and G45. Glock says the Gen5 version adds a flared magwell and a cutout at the front of the frame to speed up reloads, plus an ambidextrous slide stop lever.

Glock 45: full-size grip, compact slide

Glock describes the G45 as combining a compact slide with a full-size frame. In numbers, you get the G17’s 17-round capacity and 5.47-inch height with the G19’s 6.85-inch slide length.

Glock 19: the compact all-rounder

Glock describes the G19 as versatile for many roles because of its reduced size. It holds 15 rounds. Its grip is the shortest of the three, at 5.04 inches tall with a magazine. Glock’s Gen6 page calls it a popular choice for uses ranging from everyday carry to professional use. That matters if one gun will cover both your home and your holster.

Glock 26: carry-sized

Glock calls the G26 a popular option for concealed carry. It holds 10 rounds as standard, compared with 15 to 17 for the three larger models. If the gun will live at home, that capacity gap is the main trade-off to weigh.

Gen5, V or Gen6?

Glock’s US site currently lists all three. The law-enforcement pages show Gen5 models, the commercial pages show V models (G17 V, G19 V, G45 V and G26 V), and Gen6 covers the G17, G19 and G45. Glock announced Gen6 on December 6, 2025. According to Glock, it adds:

• A palm swell and an extended thumb rest
• A new RTF6 grip texture
• An undercut trigger guard
• A flat-faced trigger as standard
• An optic-ready slide. Standard-frame Gen6 pistols come with three optic plates that let various optics screw directly into the slide.

Glock lists each Gen6 set as including three magazines, a magazine speed loader, a cleaning set, a pistol case and a backstrap set.

Weapon lights: seeing what you might shoot

One of Glock’s own safety rules is “always be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.” In a dark house, that means being able to see. A rail-mounted weapon light is one way to keep the light on the gun. Streamlight, for example, rates its TLR-7 X at 725 lumens. It has ambidextrous rear paddle switches and a rail clamp that Streamlight says attaches and detaches without putting your hands in front of the muzzle.

Check fit before you buy. Streamlight’s TLR-7/TLR-8 compatibility list, revised July 15, 2026, covers “most full-size & compact models with rails” for Glock through Gen 5. That revision doesn’t name Gen6 models or subcompacts like the G26, so confirm with the light maker for those. Adding a light also means you need a holster made for that light.
