Quick answer: A left-handed holster is a mirror image of a right-handed one, made for a left-hand draw on your left side. You get one three ways: a dedicated left-hand model, a holster you order with a left draw hand, or an ambidextrous design. Fit to your exact gun, trigger coverage and retention matter exactly as they do for right-handers.
Three Ways to Get a Left-Handed Holster
| Option | Example, in the maker’s words |
|---|---|
| Choose left when you order | Safariland’s duty holster pages have a “DRAW HAND” option; Wright Leather Works asks you to “Select your Shooting Hand”; Blade-Tech says “Whether you’re left or right-handed, the VALOR Duty Holster can be built to accomodate your specific needs.” |
| A dedicated left-hand model | Bravo Concealment sells a left-hand Torsion line, such as its “IWB Holster for Glock 19, 23, 32, 45 (Left Hand).” |
| Ambidextrous | Mission First Tactical lists its Minimalist as a “Minimalist AIWB Holster (Ambidextrous)”; DeSantis says its Sof-Tuck “fits most concealable handguns in both right or left hand configuration.” |
Left-hand choices can be narrower. Bravo’s left-hand Torsion collection, for example, shows “2 products available,” both for Glock models. Check that your exact gun is listed before you order.
What to Check (Same as Any Holster)
- Exact fit to your gun. Safariland asks you to “SELECT FIREARM MAKE,” and its holsters “may look different based on your gun and light selections.”
- Full trigger coverage and solid retention. See our guide to holster retention levels.
- The right carry position for your left side. Mirror the clock: strong side is about 8 to 9 o’clock instead of 3 to 4, and appendix about 10 to 11 o’clock instead of 1 to 2. See our IWB vs OWB comparison and appendix carry guide.
- Optics and lights. Order the left-hand version cut for your red dot or light; see our light-bearing holster guide.
Other Left-Handed Options
- Chest holsters: Alien Gear says its chest holster is “Also suitable for left-hand users”; see our chest holster guide.
- Cross draw: a left-hander wears it on the right side; see our cross draw holster guide.
- Custom builds: makers such as Custom Holster Solutions offer a “DRAW” choice of right or left on made-to-order holsters.
Comfort and Belt for a Lefty IWB
The Cloudster Pillow holster wedge has a hook-and-loop backing that mounts to any flat-back IWB or AIWB holster, left-hand or right-hand, angles the grip into your body, and has memory-foam fill you can add or remove to set its thickness.
A stiff gun belt matters on either side. The Kore gun belts we carry are 1.5″ wide; the Kore Black Tactical Nylon Gun Belt is rated by Kore for “Up to 10 lbs. • IWB, OWB or Appendix,” with “40+ positions in ¼″ increments.”
Left-Handed Holster: Questions People Ask
Can I use a right-handed holster on my left side?
A right-hand holster is shaped and clipped for the right side, so it won’t sit or draw correctly on the left. Get a left-hand or ambidextrous model.
Are ambidextrous holsters as good?
They can be, if they still fit your gun, cover the trigger and hold it firmly. Check the maker’s fit list.
Why are there fewer left-handed holsters?
Some makers offer left-hand versions for only some models, as Bravo’s two-product left-hand Torsion line shows. Ordering with a left draw hand widens the choice.
Does a holster wedge work on a left-handed holster?
The Cloudster Pillow mounts to any flat-back IWB or AIWB holster, either hand.
