Quick answer: A .45 ACP holster has to fit your exact pistol, not just the caliber: a 5″ 1911, a Commander, an Officer-size 1911 and a double-stack .45 all need different holsters. Pick your carry position, then a holster molded for your model and slide length, with full trigger coverage, firm retention and a cut for any light or optic.
Caliber Isn’t the Fit: Model and Slide Length Are
.45 ACP covers very different guns. Alien Gear’s 1911 range alone covers “full-size, Commander, and Officer-frame variants,” with shells “molded to the specific contours of your 1911—whether you’re running a 5″ Government model, a 4.25″ Commander, or a compact Officer frame.” It warns that “not every holster accommodates its frame correctly—especially when you factor in railed variants, laser grips, or non-standard slide lengths.”
Double-stack .45s are their own shapes again. Craft Holsters, for example, lists holsters for the “Smith & Wesson M&P (cal .45) – 4.5″” separately, with IWB, OWB, appendix, shoulder, paddle and duty options for that one pistol.
What Goes Wrong With a Generic Fit
Alien Gear lists the problems: “A generic fit invites problems: poor retention, slide drag, inconsistent draw angle, or discomfort during extended carry.” For a model-molded holster, it says the shell is “shaped around the exact dust cover, trigger guard geometry, and muzzle length.”
Carry Options for a .45
| Style | Good for | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| IWB / appendix | Concealed carry | IWB vs OWB |
| OWB belt or paddle | Range, open carry, cover-garment carry | Paddle holsters |
| Shoulder | Seated carry, jackets | Shoulder holsters |
| Chest | Hiking and outdoors | Chest holsters |
Alien Gear says its 1911 holsters come in “IWB, OWB, and hybrid formats,” and that its IWB versions “tuck tightly into the body, helping you conceal confidently under a t-shirt, flannel, or jacket.” For 1911 inside-the-waistband carry specifically, see our 1911 IWB holster guide. If you run a light or red dot, the holster has to be cut for it; see our light-bearing holster guide.
A Spare 1911 Magazine
Our .45 ACP Cloudster magnetic mag carriers are built for 1911s: they fit .45 ACP 1911-style single-stack magazines, with a wider, tapered channel and magnetic retention. The .45 ACP IWB/OWB Mag Carrier has one belt clip that works inside or outside the waistband; there are also pocket and sling bag versions. We don’t claim a fit for any other .45 magazine.
For inside-the-waistband comfort, the Cloudster Pillow holster wedge mounts to any flat-back IWB or AIWB holster with hook-and-loop and comes in four sizes. For the belt, see the Kore gun belts we carry.
45 ACP Holster: Questions People Ask
Will a 1911 holster fit any .45?
No. 1911 holsters are made for 1911 frames, and even then for a slide length (5″, 4.25″ Commander or Officer). Double-stack .45s need their own model’s holster.
Does a Commander fit a Government-length holster?
Check the maker’s list; Alien Gear molds to each length separately.
What magazines do Cloudster .45 carriers fit?
.45 ACP 1911-style single-stack magazines.
Can I carry a full-size .45 concealed?
Yes, with a holster made for it: Alien Gear’s 1911 range covers full-size frames, and its IWB versions are made to tuck tightly into the body.
