Glock 17 vs 19: Which One Should You Carry?

Short answer: The Glock 17 and Glock 19 are the same width, fire the same 9mm round and share the same trigger. The Glock 17 is 0.67″ longer, its grip is 0.43″ taller, and it holds two more rounds (17 vs. 15). For concealed carry, most people find the Glock 19 easier to hide and more comfortable sitting down. The Glock 17 carries fine if your build and your holster setup can handle the taller grip. Every number on this page comes from Glock’s own spec sheets, checked September 2026.

The difference that matters for carry: 0.43 inches of grip

Both guns are 1.34″ wide, so width never decides this one. Height and length do, and they cause two different problems.

The grip is what prints. When you bend, reach or sit, the bottom of the grip is the part that pushes out against your shirt. The Glock 17’s grip sits 0.43″ taller than the Glock 19’s. That doesn’t sound like much, but it’s the exact spot that tents a T-shirt. Holster makers and experienced carriers say the same thing: the grip, not the slide, is what gives a gun away.

The slide is what you feel when you sit. Carried appendix (AIWB), the front of the holster rides down toward your thigh. The Glock 17’s slide and barrel are 0.47″ longer, so the muzzle end of the holster is more likely to dig in when you sit or drive. Lean shooters often carry a G17 appendix without trouble. With a bigger midsection, the G19 is usually the easier fit.

The weight gap mostly disappeared with the V models

A lot of older comparisons say the Glock 17 is noticeably heavier. That was true for Gen5: Glock lists the G17 Gen5 at 24.97 oz with an empty magazine, 1.34 oz more than the G19. On Glock’s current V models, the G17 V and G19 V weigh exactly the same with an empty magazine: 23.63 oz. Loaded, the G17 V is only 0.88 oz heavier, and most of that is the two extra rounds. If you’re choosing between the current models, weight shouldn’t be what decides it.

Are Glock 17 and 19 magazines interchangeable?

One way only. The Glock 19 takes Glock 17 magazines: Glock lists the 17-round magazine as an option for the G19, and it just sticks out past the bottom of the grip. The Glock 19’s 15-round magazine isn’t on Glock’s list of options for the G17, because it’s too short for the full-size grip. If you own both, stock up on 17-round magazines and they’ll run in either gun.

How many rounds does a Glock 17 hold?

17 in the standard magazine, plus one in the chamber. Glock also lists 19, 24, 31 and 33-round magazines for the G17. The Glock 19 holds 15 in its standard magazine and takes the same longer magazines. Some states cap magazine capacity, so check your local law before you buy.

Which is more accurate?

The Glock 17 has a mechanical edge. Its sights sit 0.48″ farther apart (6.50″ vs. 6.02″), and a longer sight radius makes small aiming errors easier to see. In practice, at typical self-defense distances, most people shoot the two about the same. The difference shows up more in competition and at longer distances than in everyday carry.

Glock 17 or 19: which should you carry?

Pick the Glock 19 if:

  • You carry every day, especially appendix (AIWB)
  • You have a bigger midsection or a shorter torso
  • You want one gun for carry, the range and the nightstand

Pick the Glock 17 if:

  • You’re lean or tall and already carry a full-size gun comfortably
  • You want the two extra rounds and the longer sight radius
  • The gun will mostly live at home, on duty or at the range

If you like the full-size grip but want a shorter slide, Glock’s G19X pairs a G17-height grip (5.47″) with a G19-length slide (6.85″). Keep in mind the grip is the part that prints, so a G19X hides like a Glock 17, not a Glock 19.

How to carry either one comfortably

We make the Cloudster Pillow holster wedge, so this is the part we think about all day. Printing and comfort both come down to where the grip sits against your body. A holster wedge attaches to the back of your IWB or appendix holster and tilts the grip in toward you. That pulls a Glock 17 or 19 grip out from under your shirt and puts a soft layer between the holster edge and your stomach.

  • It works with any Kydex IWB or AIWB holster that has room for a velcro pad. Nothing changes on the gun.
  • It matters most with the Glock 17. That extra 0.43″ of grip is exactly what a wedge is built to tuck in.
  • The fill is adjustable, so you can set more tilt for the taller G17 grip or less for a G19.

Quick answers

Is the Glock 19 better for concealed carry than the Glock 17?
For most people, yes. It’s the same width, but the shorter grip prints less and the shorter slide is more comfortable sitting down.

Is the Glock 17 too big to conceal?
No. Plenty of people carry one every day, especially leaner shooters with a good holster and a wedge to tuck the grip. It just takes more attention to clothing and setup than a Glock 19.

Will a Glock 17 fit in a Glock 19 holster?
Some open-bottom holsters are cut to fit both, and many aren’t. Check with the holster maker for your exact model before you carry.

Do the Glock 17 and 19 shoot the same ammo?
Yes. Both are 9mm (9×19).
